The Mind and Body Connection

It usually takes from eight to twelve years for the “seed” of cancer, in the form of a cellular anomaly, to become a detectable cancerous tumor. Galen, the second century physician, said that psychological factors contributed greatly to the development of cancer. He believed that melancholic women were more likely to develop cancer than those who were not. Physicians recognize the relationship between emotional trauma and the development of cancer.

Coping with Stress

It’s often said that stress is one of the most destructive elements in people’s daily lives, but it is only a half truth. The way we react to stress appears to be more important than the stress itself. Stress, along with the inability to cope, leads to an impaired immune system. Stress and depression inhibit the function of antibody production, as well as lymphocytes helper T cells, which are natural killer cells.

Meditation on Peace and Freedom

The form of meditation we teach is in hopes of reaching a state where you are at an inner peace, and experience a sense of release from everything impeding that peace. Mediation does not mean contemplation alone; it is also a healing process. The word “meditation” derives from the Latin word “Mederi,” to remedy — the same as “medicine.” You can use meditation to heal a mental affliction caused by psychological stress, first by achieving an inner calm and then, in a peaceful state of mind, contemplating the problem, its cause, and how to resolve it.

Within the first two weeks you can learn this basic mediation practice, which you can do at the beginning of your day before breakfast and, ideally, also following the day’s activities before you go to bed.

Practical Application of Mediation

Sitting relaxed for a couple of minutes, loosen up your shoulders, neck and legs. Lie on your back (the easy pose) or if you prefer a chair, choose one that is neither too soft nor too hard, with a straight back. Keep both your legs together and the weight of your feet equally distributed.

Place your hands in your lap, one on top of the other, or on the floor by your side palm facing up, or on your knees, the tips of the index fingers and thumbs forming a circle with the tips touching.

Keep your eyes either open or closed, with the inner gaze up towards the middle of your forehead, without straining. Imagine that you are a tiny pinpoint of conscious light radiating vibrations of love and peace to the whole world at large. Feel peaceful and detached. Do not feel the need to do anything. Breathe spontaneously. After a minute, become aware of your breath, the coolness of the in-flow inside your lower nostrils the gentile rise of your abdomen and as you exhale the natural release of your body. Train your mind to be more and more aware of your breath until you feel a sense of connection with your higher self or subconscious mind.

By concentrating on the flow of your breath, you will notice your breathing automatically slowing down. In a relaxed state of mind, focus on the vital healing energy of the breath. Allow your thoughts to flow undisturbed. Experience the alternating coolness of the in-breath and warmth of the out-breath.

Imagine that tiny pinpoint of light, or energy, spreading out into a blanket of light emanating to yourself and then to your loved ones. Start with 10 minutes of meditation and slowly increase to 20 minutes a day. You can ask “Where in my body do I feel tension or a problem such as a disease?” “What is the benefit it is trying to bring me and what should I do?”  Taking in as big of breath that is comfortable direct that healing energy to any part of the body that needs your attention.

After a couple of minutes, associate your awareness of peace with the feeling of stillness, and the release of inner tension with the warmth of the rejuvenation. Take cool and cleansing breaths in through the nostrils, and warm and healing breaths out through the mouth.

Guide these two feelings by repeating mentally, from time to time, “peace” as you inhale and “freedom” as you exhale. Or you can choose any virtue or any suggestive positive affirmation that you want to invite.

When thoughts persist in floating into your mind, repeat to yourself while inhaling, “I am full of inner peace” and “I am a free soul” while exhaling. Pause again, to be aware of the breath for a minute, and then resume the repetition of “peace” and “freedom.”

In the last minutes of this ten-minute session, repeat and feel “Harmony, Profound inner harmony,” while inhaling and then “All tension is draining out” while exhaling. Breathe in, gathering in the fullness of peace and exhale, smoothing out all inner conflicts. Detach your mind and relax for a couple of minutes before you get up.

Another way to enter into a relaxing state is to listen to some meditation music or use a commentary meditation tape. I highly recommend the uplifting Brahma Kumaris meditation CD and BellaRuth Naparstek healing CD. You can contact Brahma Kumaris website for free instructional mediation classes.

Food for Thought

  • Every thought you think affects your health and happiness.
  • Every thought you think will either make you a master of life or a slave of life.
  • Every thought that is positive in nature attracts a positive result to you psychically.
  • Every thought you think starts out psychically, but then returns to you in the physical manifestation…weather as a person, thing, condition, or circumstance. Therefore, as you choose your thoughts you choose your life. Every thought you think that is prosperous, for example, attracts prosperity.
  • Be aware of every thought that you are thinking
  • There is a positive and negative side to every person and thing. If you start to think about the negative, catch yourself and then immediately re-frame your thought by putting your mindset on the positive side.

Stop listening to the “critical voice” that comments on everything you do or say. Repeat to yourself “I deeply love and respect myself”. Be mindful on trying to shorten the time it takes you to censor or transform a negative thought.

The Principles of the Spoken Word

  • Every word you speak is a vibrational energy.
  • Every word you speak fills the immediate atmosphere with unseen but very real psychic vibration energy.
  • Every word you speak affects human beings, animals, plants and inanimate objects on a psychic vibration level.
  • Every word you speak sets up a psychic vibrational power in direct proportion to the intensity of the force or volume with which it is spoken.
  • Every word you speak either cleanses or poisons the psychic atmosphere in which it is spoken.

Control Practices

  • Always be aware of what you are saying and how you are saying it.
  • Be aware of the words you choose to say, and what you have to say.
  • Avoid the use of negative words, for they set up and attract negative vibrational reactions.
  • If you have something unpleasant that has to be said, pause for a moment mentally and try to use words that will take the psychic sting out of what you have to say.
  • If you smile when you speak, or at least have a pleasant facial expression, you can increase the positive vibrational energies of your spoken word.
  • If a negative (destructive) word slips out, say out loud, “I nullify the word(s) I have just used,” and instead bless that person or condition.

Emotional Toxicity

When we choose to forgive not only others but ourselves, the true healing begins. Practice the Honopono Method of healing with these for simple words each time you feel a wave of emotional toxicity run through you whether it is fear, anger, resentment, frustration, or any other emotion.

I love you

I am sorry

I forgive you

I love you

The more passion and feeling you put into these words, the quicker the subconscious mind hears them and responds.

What is the Feeling You Call Hunger?

When you “feel hunger”, you are not necessarily hungry for food. Your body needs to be nourished in many ways. When you are experiencing hunger and it isn’t meal or snack time, drink a glass of purified water, then ask yourself:

  • Am I nourishing my eyes with color and beauty?
  • Am I nourishing my ears with music and the sounds of nature?
  • Am I nourishing my nose with the natural fragrances of the world?
  • Am I nourishing my hands and body with the touch of another?
  • Am I nourishing my heart with the love and friendship of others?
  • Am I nourishing my spirit with dance and play?
  • Am I nourishing my body with the joy of preparing healthy food?
  • Am I nourishing my soul with the remembrance of God?

Begin to recognize that there are many forms of hunger. Feeding the human spirit is a necessity for emotional health. Notice that none of these hungers are for “things”, but are for experiences and human connections.  No amount of food can satisfy these needs. Feeding yourself to fill emptiness in your relationship with yourself, or others, may result in being overweight, unhappy and limit your ability to heal.
