Why You Should Avoid Wheat and Other Gluten Products

Many of my patients cringe at the idea of giving up their favorite whole wheat bread, crackers, pastries, and cereals when they are trying to lose weight, correct high blood sugar issues, or prevent or treat cancer. Most of my patients are confused as to whether there are any health risks to going gluten free for the average person- one who does not have Celiac disease.

The truth is that even if you are not gluten intolerant or gluten sensitive, there are hundreds of published studies that indicate that gluten can cause inflammation in your digestive system, and even cause “permeability” in your gut, which can lead to a health condition that is on the rise called Leaky Gut.

Leaky gut is a condition that could happen when tight junctions in the gut, which control what passes through the lining of the small intestine, don’t work properly. This could let substances leak into the bloodstream, causing digestive issues, food sensitivities and autoimmune problems.

Gluten is a hot topic in the media now, and most companies are jumping on the band-wagon to keep your dollar in their pocket by creating gluten free products. All grains, gluten free or not, are considered a carbohydrate that turns into glucose in your blood. Many of my patients report symptom relief of bloating, gas, cramps, mucus, diarrhea, and pains when they have eliminated gluten from their diet. Eating grain free or gluten free grains, such as quinoa and rice, in a responsible manner is what I advocate.
